Three studio pottery vases - Dunster Pottery and Martin Pettinger
We have put together this trio of beautifully shaped pottery vases, with complementary decoration. We suspect that whilst all three have different maker's marks, they may all have been decorated by Martin Pettinger. There is more information about each vase below.
1. A lovely vase with a waisted shape, flaring out at the base and neck. The terracotta body is glazed in glossy, dark brown with decoration of stylised wrens on branches in yellow slip. Impressed 'DUNSTER' on the unglazed base. The decoration has many similarities to pieces done by Martin Pettinger, who we believe was working at Dunster Pottery for several years, starting around 1975.
2. A very attractive, small, tapering bud vase, with a dark brown glossy glaze and slip fawn-yellow flames or petals coming up the sides of the vase from the base. The base is marked with an impressed MP - for Martin Pettinger, Old Forge Pottery, Williton, Somerset.
3. The larger, tapering, brown glazed vase with a terracotta body and unglazed base, decorated with abrushed slip pattern of fawn-yellow flower heads around the lower part. This vase has no maker's mark but owing to the distinctive glazes and decorative style, it is attributed to Martin Pettinger, Old Forge Pottery, Williton, Somerset.
