Hampton Pottery slip decorated, shaped dish
A unusual, egg-shaped studio pottery dish made by Jean Hampton, Hampton Pottery of Penn, Wolverhampton. The terracotta body has an unglazed underside, while the interior is hand-decorated with different coloured, brown, tan, cream and fawn slips, forming a pattern of concentric circles, with dark dashes around the rim. The Hampton Pottery label is on the underside.
Jean Hampton began selling pottery to help fund her daughter's college education, but it lead to becoming a fulltime professional potter. She produced many plates and shallow bowls, some birds and animals as well as a small number of thrown pieces, but it was her beautiful and expressive use of slip decoration that really stands out. Sadly Jean Hampton died of leukaemia in the 1980s.
