Pair of Italian Deruta pottery hens
This jolly pair of ornamental chickens were decorated by Francesca Niccacci and made in Deruta in the Umbria region of Italy, famed for its tradition of painted majolica wares.
Deruta pottery is high-quality, hand-painted ceramic often on a white ground decorated with many of the typical colours of dark blue, yellow, blue-green, green and ochre.
These are in perfect condition apart from one very small chip to the glaze on the tip of the wattle of one of the hens, as shown in the photos. These hens usually cost a lot more individually than this pair are for two, but we would hate to separate them!
