An unusual and subtley stylish, blue and grey platter or wall plate, from the Spanish Vilà Clara Ceramisistes, in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Catalonia. It is hand-decorated with a beautiful and intricate sgrafitto pattern as well as bands with a wavy line around the rim and central panel. Impressed with the Vilà Clara signature on the reverse and a hanging point.
Josep Vilà i Clara (1910-1989) began his career as a ceramics maker in a mezzanine workshop, before establishing his own business in 1950. He was joined by his sons and they have continued to expand and develop the business, combining methods and designs learnt from traditional potters with modern production techniques.
