Vintage teal Holkham Pottery mug
A vintage Holkham Pottery mug with a slightly tapering shape, giving it a wider base, and in a deep teal coloured glaze; it is decorated with a regular geometric design of squares impressed in a grid with a segmented circle within each square. This design was produced in a number of fashionable 1970s colours.
Holkham Pottery was set up in 1951 by Lady Elizabeth, the wife of the 5th Earl of Leicester. He converted the 19th-century laundry and bowling alley at Holkham into a pottery studio for her new business. Holkham was the first stately home to produce pottery onsite and sell it in its gift shop, which inspired other stately homes to do the same. The pottery business finally closed in 2007, after 56 years of trading.
