Wall unit or room divider
Teak wood room divider or wall unit with two cupboards and open shelving and a sliding glass fronted cabinet below, probably dating from the 1960s or early 1970s. Although we have been unable to establish who the manufacturer of this piece is, the quality of the construction, particularly the chamfered cupboard doors, suggest it was craftsman-made rather than on a factory production line.
The piece shows the transition away from the 'Festival' styling of the late-1950s and early 1960s to the Scandinavian influenced international modernism of the late 1960s and 1970s. Room dividers were initially fixed pieces of furniture which acted as breaks within new open-plan living areas while allowing sight-lines through, but gradually transitioned into movable pieces of furniture which could be free standing or placed against a wall. This piece adapts easily as a drinks cabinet, shelving for displayed collections or as a bookcase, and would stand out in any living room in a modern home.
